Oscars: 78th Academy Awards 2005

Sunday March 5, 2006. 5pm Pacific, 8pm Eastern

OUR PREDICTIONS

Remember, these are our predictions of who we think WILL win. These are not always who we WANT to win, nor the 'best' of the year.

Our Picks

Film: Crash
Brokeback lost momentum before ballots were due. Actors are the largest group of Academy voters and SAG voted Crash "best cast". Also, there are still homophobes in Hollywood, and Crash will recieve most of the "anti-Brokeback" votes.

Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman "Capote"
He's an "actor's actor" who consistently does great work without a win. The Academy loves biographical roles and he was the best of the 3 "bio" nominees.

Actress: Reese Witherspoon "Walk the Line"
She's young, talented, and hasn't been taken seriously unitil now (Think: Sally Field). It's also the only chance for voters to reward 'Walk the Line'.

Sup Actress: Rachel Weisz "The Constant Gardener"
The hardest category to predict. The Actor's Guild voted for her and she seems to still have momentum before ballots were due.

Sup Actor: Paul Giamatti "Cinderella Man"
He's been seen as the winner since Cinderella Man opened, but mostly because he didn't get nominated for Sideways last year. If there's an upset it may be here. The other nominees were quite good and some may vote their second choice assuming Giamatti has it in the bag.

Director: Ang Lee "Brokeback Mountain"
He's directed some great films without winning, he's likeable, and humble. It's also the consolation prize for not winning Best Picture.

Trivia

Best Picture and Best Director nominees match 5-for-5 for the first time in 24 years.

Only 3 Best Songs—A change in the rules means voters now rate their picks on a scale from 6 to 10, with an average score of at least 8.25 required for a nomination.

Composer John Williams (nods for Munich and Geisha) bring his total nominations to 45! (He lost to Brokeback Mt.)
