"Dreamgirls" marks the first time that the most-nominated film (8) was not nominated for Best Picture.

"The Departed", set in Boston, is actually a remake of a Hong Kong film.

A record five black actors are up for top awards.

Meryl Streep, the most nominated actor/actress ever, receives her 14th.

Kate Winslet (31) is the youngest person to receive five acting nominations.

Scorsese and O'Toole have never won competitive awards. (O'Toole won an honorary Oscar in 2002).

Predicting the Winners

FavoritesIt's looking like an easy year to predict the top honors. But, there's always a surprise somewhere! Whitaker has swept the pre-Oscar awards, but maybe O'Toole will win votes from sentimental voters who want to see him finally win an Oscar? Murphy looks good going into the voting, and he gave a great performance, but will they give it to the former SNL comic or reward Wahlberg for a stellar performance? Mirren and Scorsese, on the other hand, appear unbeatable.
